After a positively overwhelming experience at Region 2, I did my best to prepare for Region 1. I was thrilled to see that there was a high level of enthusiasm and interest, which was exactly what I needed.
Upon arriving Tuesday evening, I was set to respond alongside Nicholette Routhier (Faculty at Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre), and Sarah Martin (Faculty at Adelphi University), to an evening of devised performances from a handful of theatre troupes. The performances and responses from the audiences were surprising and intriguing. Moreover, the ensuing conversation between Nicholette, Sarah and I clarified the excitement and importance for the addition of the devised works program at KCACTF. Similar to ASTEP, this is a program the encourages dialogue through the arts and has the potential for great impact in a community.
For Wednesday afternoon, I was set to present the same Artist as Citizen workshop as we’ve been presenting throughout the conference, but had to make some serious modifications after meeting the 12 participants. Every one of them had either a serious history with or a passion for social justice. My activity driven workshop quickly became an intense dialogue amongst artistic warriors seeking to reinforce or revitalize their efforts. I was deeply humbled and moved by that hour and a half and know that moments like those come few and far between. Fortunately for me, my newly acquired friends at Adelphi University were interested in continuing the dialogue and introducing me to their students and peers and held an impromptu mixer later that evening.
Thursday’s workshop raised the bar even further and those who partook in both session expressed an interest in continuing the dialogue outside of the conference. Including a 2nd impromptu session with the students of Le Moyne College on Friday morning, I met with 66 students and faculty members. Most importantly though, I connected with Nicholette and Maggie, Celena and Becky Beth, Blake and Gabrielle, Sara Nelson and Sarah Martin. Thank you to them for an invigorating week and to Gregg, Raina, Cathy, Paul, John, Mike and the rest of the Region 1 family.
